5 Online Writing Jobs for Stay-at-Home Moms

Writing is among the most ideal online jobs for stay-at-home moms, offering flexible hours and the ability to work at your own pace. And with the right experience and skills, writers can earn a substantial income.

However, I have come across writing jobs that require fixed hours and time trackers, so just a disclaimer that not all online writing jobs are the same. This leads me to my next point:

There are many types of writing jobs that are available online. And each of these specializations have their own unique set of qualifications, scope of work, and compensation.

1. SEO article writing

This is the most common online writing job. It's often termed as blog article writer or SEO content writer.

As the job title suggests, this job involves writing blog articles for businesses while strategically incorporating search engine optimization (SEO) keywords to improve the article’s ranking on search engines like Google.

Qualifications:

  • I started with this kind of job when I was a fresh graduate and had virtually no professional writing experience, so SEO article writing is a great starting point for beginners.
  • Strong writing skills and basic SEO knowledge are ideal for this type of job.

Compensation:

  • The compensation for SEO article writing is usually at a per-word rate. As of 2023, the Freelance Writers' Guild of the Philippines reports that the average rate is ₱2.97 per word. However, in my experience, some clients go as low as ₱0.50 to ₱1.00 per word.
  • Some clients choose to pay per hour. According to Payscale, as of this writing, the average hourly pay in 2025 for an entry level freelance writer is ₱100.96.

2. Ghostwriting

Ghostwriting often overlaps with other writing jobs such as article writing and e-book writing.

Essentially, it means that you won’t be credited as the author and can’t include the work in your portfolio due to confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements.

However, ghostwriting can be a lucrative career, especially for e-book writing. Many authors seek ghostwriters to help them develop books quickly or refine their ideas into polished content.

Many businesses are also on the lookout for ghostwriters to write content for their blog and social media. This allows you to find jobs quickly and start your online career with minimal barriers to entry.

Qualifications:

  • A background in writing is usually all it takes to get hired as a ghostwriter. However, depending on the scope, you might also need strong storytelling and research skills for this job.

Compensation:

  • The compensation for blog article ghostwriting is more or less the same as "regular" SEO article writing, and is typically charged per word.
  • For e-book ghostwriting, some clients choose to pay per project and the compensation depends on the length of the e-book and its scope. Typically, the rate ranges from ₱5,000 to ₱50,000+ depending on length and research required to write the e-book.

3. Marketing copywriting

Copywriting is a specialized type of writing that focuses on creating content to drive sales or generate leads.

The scope of work is extensive for a marketing copywriting, including crafting headlines, product descriptions, landing page copies, email campaigns, and social media captions and ads—to name a few.

And since copywriting is results-driven, experienced writers who consistently produce high-converting content can command higher rates over time. Some companies may also offer commission-based incentives for copywriters.

Qualifications:

  • If you have marketing or sales background, this could be a good online career pathway for you.
  • Creativity, persuasive writing skills, and basic graphic design knowledge are highly beneficial.

Compensation:

  • Since copywriting covers a wide range of work, the pay varies. Some clients pay per piece. For example, according to the Freelance Writers' Guild of the Philippines, the average rate for writing web copy is ₱300 per page.
  • Typically, clients offer an hourly or fixed monthly rate for copywriters. According to Payscale, as of this writing, the average hourly rate for entry-level copywriters in 2025 is ₱135.50

Another job that's closely related to marketing copywriting is being a video script writer.

With the increasing popularity of short-form videos on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts, and other similar platforms, there has also been a spike in demand for scriptwriters.

The role entails writing engaging scripts that capture the audience's attention within the first few seconds.

However, video script writing isn’t limited to short-form content. Many businesses also need scripts for longer videos such as explainer videos, product demonstrations, webinars, and even YouTube vlogs.

Qualifications:

  • If you have a background in storytelling or creative writing, this could be a great fit for you.
  • Understanding social media trends and audience behavior will give you an edge in creating scripts
